Acting on a call related to animal cruelty, SPCA Peace Officers rescued 52 Maine coon cats and one dog from a residence in Harrison several weeks ago. They were among a total of 60 cats and ten dogs found on the premises and used for breeding. Many of the cats showed signs of neglect and others were suffering from medical conditions. Because half of the cats are pregnant, the SPCA is preparing for the cat population to quadruple in the coming weeks.
With 70 resident cats already being housed by the SPCA and awaiting adoption, and with kitten season just around the corner, SPCA resources are stretched to their limits. We are in immediate need of cat and kitten food, litter, blankets, beds, cat carriers, litter pans, and toys to help care for the animals. The SPCA also needs monetary donations to provide the cats with rehabilitation, testing for diseases, grooming, vaccinations, and spay/neuter.
"The rescue doubled our cat population," said the president of the SPCA. "We could have as many as 100 kittens within the next few weeks. The good news is that once we treat and spay/neuter them, most of the cats will be very adoptable."
