Help Mend a Friend: ZsaZsa
Zsa Zsa, a beautiful and sweet maltese was rescued from a high kill shelter a few months back. Scarred and shaking, we knew Zsa Zsa must have had a sad story to tell as her big brown eyes told a story of heartbreak. Like all of our rescued shelter animals, Zsa Zsa got her first Vet check-up right away when she arrived-something she probably hadn't received in years. We were all taken aback when we learned that this petite, 7 lb. girl had heartworm-to be exact, she had 14 ten inch heartworms around her little heart! She obviously had the heartworms for some time and it was left untreated, and yet heartworm is 100% preventable! After an intense endoscopic heart procedure, all the worms were removed and then Zsa Zsa was given 2 more heartworm treatments and is now on her way to a speedy recovery! BUT, we still need your help! We hope you will consider donating to our Mend a Friend Fund to help offset the thousands of dollars in Vet bills this has cost. It was of course, well worth the money-just looks at Zsa Zsa's smiling face now, as she assists our Clinic Manager!
Help Mend a Friend: Oliver
Hi, my name is Oliver, but you can call me Ollie! I am an adorable Boston Terrier mix about 1 year's old. Lucky for me, I was rescued from a high-kill shelter by the SPCA just in the nic of time-I was slated to be euthanized because the shelter I was at had no more room for me. You can tell from my big brown eyes that I am a gentle soul. When I arrived in Briarcliff, I was welcomed with hugs and kisses and lots of yummy treats! However, I was also limping, so the SPCA staff sent me to the good people at Village Animal Clinic in Ardsley to get an x-ray and it ended up that I had broken my leg previously and a piece of bone had chipped off and was in my hip-yikes! Thanks to the SPCA Mend a Friend Fund, I got the surgery I needed and am now ready to be adopted, however, my surgery was a bit costly, so I hope you will help other animals just like me and donate today to this special medical fund!
Help Mend a Friend: Thomasina
I am a beautiful female 10-12 years young cat who was brought to the SPCA as a stray. I was so very thin and beat up and they found a large tumor on my thyroid that is making me sick. The SPCA is treating me with a medication to manage my symptoms but it is not healthy for me long term. What I really need is a treatment of radioactive iodine which would cure me, but it’s really expensive. I am so glad the SPCA is willing to give me a chance, even if I am not the youngest cat around. I really love people and I’m told I am really affectionate. I know I have so many more good years to give someone, if I get the chance.
Help Mend a Friend: Oshi
My name is Oshi and I am a 9month old Japanese Chin. I am a lucky little guy because me and a bunch of my brothers and sisters were rescued by the Humane Law Enforcement Agents of the SPCA of Westchester. We were taken from some people who weren’t taking very good care of us.
As if that didn’t make me lucky enough, while in the care of the SPCA it was discovered that I had something called Distichia. I know it sounds like a big, fancy word but it is a condition where my eyelids were growing eyelashes where they shouldn’t be growing. It was really uncomfortable, kind of like sand in my eyes all the time. My sister Chloe also needed eye surgery. She had bad conjunctivitis that went untreated and cause her cornea to rupture. Good new is she received surgery also and is now all better and even got adopted!
Our combined surgeries cost over $3,000. Through the Mend-a-Friend program the SPCA was able to help us both and we are so thankful they believed we were worth saving!
Help Mend a Friend: Belle
My name is Belle and I am a very happy, exuberant young girl. My breed sometimes gets what is called “Happy Tail”. Our tails are very thin and don’t have very much fur to protect them, but boy do we love to wag them! Sometimes we wag them so much they bang on things and start to bleed at the tip. Well this happened to my tail and it just wouldn’t heal. Unfortunately, in order for it to heal properly they had to amputate the end of my tail. While this didn’t make me happy, I was a good girl and wore my lamp shade on my head so I couldn’t pull off my bandage. Despite our best efforts, my tail got infected so I needed another surgery and now I have a cute little stump for a tail! That’s okay, I know how to wiggle my butt! Thanks to Mend-a-Friend I will be just like new in no time and ready to wag my butt right into someone’s heart.
Help Mend a Friend: Moon
Moon's heart-wrenching tale this 2 month old kitten may look happy and healthy now, but that wasn't the case when Moon first arrived at the shelter's doors. A sweet elder gentleman noticed this adorable kitten, laying lifeless in a wet, dark parking lot in Ossining and luckily made the decision to help Moon and wrapped her up in a towel and rushed her to the SPCA immediately. Not only did Dr. Stein, the SPCA's Simpson Clinic veterinarian, realize that Moon had cerebeller hypoplasia, a condition that makes her walk wobbly, but she was extremely anemic and needed a blood transfusion if she was going to survive through the night. Thanks to Maury, Moon's new cattery mate here at the SPCA, who generously stepped up to the plate and donated 40 cc's of his own blood, Moon survived and is now on her way to a speedy recovery!
Help Mend a Friend: Henessey
Hi, my name is Henny. Everyone here at the SPCA says I am just the sweetest dog. My big brown eyes always melt hearts! I came to the SPCA as a stray, but the staff here thinks someone must have owned me and just didn't give me the care I needed. I don't know why someone would do that because I am such a good boy and love people and animals! I was just so happy to get out of the cold and get some good food in me the day I arrived at the SPCA. I'm a bit skinny but the staff at the shelter has fattened me up! After the veterinarian examined me in the SPCA Simpson Clinic, she realized my back legs and knees were luxating, which is why I was walking kind of funny. It's hard to say if I was born like this or if I was hit by a car and never treated, either way, I have now had 2 surgeries to fix me up and the great people here even got me into physical therapy to strength up my muscles so I could walk well again. I love swimming in the pool with my physical therapist and don't I look handsome in my doggy life saver! If you are looking for a loyal companion who loves to give kisses, stop in and ask for me, Henny. I am healthy and happy now, just waiting for my new furrever home.
Henny required 2 surgeries to help straighten out his hips and knee. The surgeries cost over $2,000. Please sponsor Henny and others like him by donating to the Mend a Friend Fund.
